Hello. My name is Alyssa Reynoso-Morris, and I am an award-winning author. My journey toward publication was challenging as an English Language Learner (ELL) in an underfunded and under-resourced school in the Bronx. I did not learn to read until I was in the fourth grade. I witnessed my mother’s tears during my third-grade parent-teacher conference after my teacher told her I would need to be left back because I was not reading at grade level.
GIVEAWAY: I am excited to offer a signed copy of Gloriana Presente to one lucky winner who subscribes to my website and LatinaMedia.Co’s email list (below in the footer). Thanks to the intervention of Dr. Lopez, a Latina principal who provided my mother with Hooked on Phonics VHS/DVD tapes, and the unwavering support of my fourth-grade teacher, Mr. DiSalvo, I taught myself to read. Not only did I learn to read, but I was able to pass the standardized tests. Despite facing significant challenges, I discovered my voice.
I defied expectations and pursued higher education with the help of multiple scholarships. My journey took me abroad to India and Tanzania, where I made a difference in communities facing similar challenges. Today, I am proud to be recognized as an award-winning author. I am a testament to the power of perseverance and the impact of dedicated educators.
Inspired by my experience, I penned the picture book Gloriana Presente: A First Day of School Story. It is an affirming multicultural story that will help new students stand tall and discover the joys of community at school. This beautifully painted, imaginative picture book celebrates the transformative power of self-soothing. Through the character of Gloriana, readers witness the transformation of a young girl finding her voice and overcoming her fears—a journey that mirrors my own. My book comes out in July 2024 in both English and Spanish.
