It’s a risky venture to turn a much-loved book into a TV series or film. There is a huge amount of pressure to capture the story in an authentic way, bring the characters to life, and match the visuals that millions of readers already have in their heads. While the running joke is that the book is always better than the movie, there are some productions that really do get it right. And Amazon Prime Video’s Daisy Jones & the Six is one of them.
Based on the novel of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid, Daisy Jones & The Six is set in Los Angeles during the ‘70s, where we meet the biggest rock ‘n’ roll band in the world. It is “loosely based” on the tumultuous experience of Fleetwood Mac, which lets you know you’re in for a wild ride. The show dropped on March 3, and quickly garnered buzz for its acting, fabulous vintage fashion, catchy music, and overall super-cool vibe. We are happy to report that there were two Latinx actors who were a part of making Daisy Jones & the Six truly great: Camila Morrone and Sebastian Chacon.
Camila Morrone as Camila Alvarez Dunne
You know the saying “Behind every great man is a great woman?” Camila Alvarez Dunne personifies this in Daisy Jones & the Six, holding it down as rockstar Billy Dunne’s loving and supportive wife. She is played by Argentinian-American actress Camila Morrone, who has also acted in films including Valley Girl, Bukowski, and Death Wish.
Morrone lights up the screen in this show with her effortless throwback beauty, fab ‘70s outfits, and superb acting. She captures the nuances of trying to hold onto a rockstar marriage while insisting on her dignity, wielding power, and expressing vulnerability and deep emotion. Camila Alvarez Dunne is the glue that keeps the band together, a layered character that Camila Morrone played perfectly.
Sebastian Chacon as Warren Rojas
Every band needs the fun-loving guy who doesn’t take fame, life, or himself, too seriously, and Warren Rojas is just that. The cool drummer of Daisy Jones & the Six is played by Ecuadorian-Colombian-American actor Sebastian Chacon, who has also appeared in shows like Pose, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, and Narcos.
He is the comic relief in a sea of heavy topics like drug addiction, unrequited love, near-death experiences, sexism, and the like. What makes Warren Rojas–and Sebastian Chacon–even cooler is that the fictional musician was once known as Warren Rhodes. This was the name Taylor Jenkins Reid gave the drummer in the novel; it was Sebastian’s idea to make him Chicano, from the name change to his sartorial choices. And we are totally here for that.
